The Kissing Project Day 14 | Russ & Shannon Hoorn

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Day 14…Matchmaker, matchmaker make me a match! Find me a find! Catch me a catch.

Introducing Russ and Shannon Hoorn, oh wait my wife already did that! Shannon, my cousin, was introduced (by Rebecca) to Russ when they were 18 years old. They dated, got engaged and married all in a year. Russ is a network administrator for Kellogsville Public Schools and Shannon holds down the fort, raising their 4 adorable children- each a carbon copy of Russ…his genes are really strong! We are thankful for them and can’t wait to see those kids grow.

How did you two meet? We first met on a winter retreat for youth group. Russ claims that Shannon stalked him for a long time, but Shannon could neither confirm or deny that fact. We think the feelings were mutual.

What was your first date? Russ: “Our first date was low key. I invited Shannon over to my apartment for movie night together. We watched Star Wars.”

Shannon: “Can you believe he didn’t have any popcorn. I married him anyways!”

What was your favorite Valentine’s Day memory? After discussing this with them at length, we discovered that their wedding anniversary is February 22nd. In addition, 3 of their 4 children were born between February 21st and 24th! Celebrating all these extra events doesn’t leave much time to celebrate Valentine’s. But, just after they found out they were pregnant on their first anniversary, they baby-mooned in Chicago.  They are both still fantasizing about that Tempurpedic bed! We think they will return shortly. Perhaps to celebrate their next anniversary.

The Kissing Project Day 13 | Joe & Amy Wyllys

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Day 13…meet Joe & Amy, a match made in high school!

We were introduced to Joe and Amy by Rob and Beth (Day 9 of the Kissing Project). This amazing couple became high school sweethearts, whose young romance turned into a great marriage with 3 kids. Due to the fact that they are local business entrepreneurs, Joe and Amy are home with their children all day long, home -schooling each one… That’s right, these two are saints!

How did you two meet? We met at our church in Cuttlerville, MI. We were 16 at the time and were in the high school youth group together.

Joe: “For me it was love at first sight. For her, it took a little more convincing.”

What was your first date? At 16 you can’t do a whole lot, but I remember going to the Grand Rapids airport before they redesigned the runways. We would park our car at the end of the runway and watch as planes landed during the evening. It was very romantic.

What was your favorite Valentine’s Day memory? Amy: “I have not had a ‘favorite’ YET…I’m saying that so Joe goes all out this year, he’s such a competitive guy! No, my favorite memory so far was when he proposed to me on Valentine’s Day weekend.”

The Kissing Project Day 12 | Harold & Joanne Voorhees

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Day 12 = Powerhouse of Politics!

Allow us to introduce Harold and Joanne Voorhees. Joanne was a term-limited State Representative when she hired Rebecca to work in her office.  After spending many campaign hours with this kind, Godly and honest couple, we learned what it means to be public servants. More than that, this couple exemplifies integrity in all areas of their lives. Both have served in the Michigan House of Representatives and on the Wyoming City Council. Harold is currently a Kent County Commissioner and Joanne is the Kent County Republican Chairman. Together they operated a family owned business. Yes, their careers are successful, but their marriage is too!  Here is a little something about their passionate, long lasting love story.

How did you two meet? We meet while pariticpating in our senior school play, “Green Valley”. Playing the roles of “Grandma” and “Grandpa” allowed us to spend a lot of time together.

What was your first date?

Joanne: “We started riding back and forth to play practice together. We spent a lot of time together. We were just kids.”

Harold: “I don’t remember what we did on our first date.  But I do remember our first kiss. Joanne was the type of girl who probably wouldn’t have let me kiss her on our first date, or the fifth for that matter. But somehow, I was able to catch her under the mistletoe and laid one on her!’

What was your favorite Valentine’s Day memory? We rented a place in our favorite city, New York.  It was right across the street from Central Park.  We ate at our favorite restaurant, Tavern on the Green.  We toured the town. It was very romantic.
