We met Tony and Becky for the first time on their wedding day, but we knew from just our phone conversations that they would be a blast to work with. Becky is from the Grand Rapids area and Tony is from Sterling Heights (not Detroit area) and they are now residents of Texas where Becky works for a computer company.

From the salon to the reception, we were with them throughout the day and what a day they planned. The ceremony was held at St. Jude Catholic Church and the reception was held at Frederik Meijer Gardens. In between we traveled to Crescent Park overlooking downtown Grand Rapids and then made our way around the Sculpture Park at Meijer Gardens.

A beautiful ceremony and a fantastic party. That’s the only way to describe Jason and Rachel’s wedding day. They were worried about the rain, but it never came. We had lots of time for photos around Grand Valley and downtown Grand Rapids. These two planned their big day from Rochester, MN where Rachel is a pediatric nurse at Mayo and Jason is finishing his degree. We are so glad that our paths crossed and we were able to be a part of their amazing day. Michigan Wedding at St. Andrew’s Cathedral | Dave + Beth Buehler

Dave and Beth met while on a trip to Australia. They had friends in common but had never really met until that trip. Funny how you have to half way around the world to find your spouse.

These two are a great couple and we are so excited for them. When they asked me to photograph the wedding and my wife to BE IN the wedding, we were humbled. It’s amazing to watch a couple go from meeting, to dating to becoming engaged to starting a new life together as husband and wife.

We have known them for many years now as Dave was in a couple of weddings we’ve photographed. We met Beth through some of our great friends. In fact, at the wedding reception, Dave and Beth were the 5th couple to get married in the past 3 years that we’ve photographed weddings for (see photo below).

The wedding was held at St. Andrew’s Cathedral (always beautiful) which is a church that is just to die for! The reception was held at the Rockford American Legion Hall, which when hearing that for the first time doesn’t get most people excited about it. However, it’s a beautiful facility in a very great location and they had the ability to bring in their own catering company, something that is far from typical in the wedding venue world.

We are so glad Dave and Beth have started their life together with such a beautiful ceremony and wonderful party for their friends and family. If you would like to see more photos, be sure to visit their personal website.

Dan and Jen were such a great couple to work with over the past year and we are so excited about their future plans. Dan and I went to high school way back in the day and stayed in touch via Facebook. I found out he was engaged when he called asking about wedding photography for his June 2010 wedding in Chicago, IL. After that we had a few phone calls with Dan, his fiance Jen and myself going over what their wedding day would look like, what they wanted etc. They had a beautiful ceremony at Northwestern University’s Chapel and an outdoor reception at Redfield Estate in Glenview, IL.

We are so excited for these two on their new life ahead. Dan is working toward his PHD at Northwestern and has been traveling around the world (literally) interviewing for jobs (yes he is that smart at what he does). Jen is a school teacher and has been for the past two years and will be looking for a new job once Dan has a place to call home soon. In the meantime, they call Shorewood, IL home.

Who Wants to Live with Someone for Eighty Years? | James Emery White

This was an email update I received from a pastor and author, James Emery White who writes on a regular basis about the intersection of Church and Culture.

If you’ve been following us for any amount of time, you understand that my wife and I BELIEVE IN and LOVE MARRIAGE. We feel privileged to document the beginnings of new marriages week in and week out. When I read this post last week, I just had to share it with everyone.

If you were to ask me, “Who wants to live with someone for eighty years?” I would proudly say “I DO!”. Enjoy!

Who Wants to Live with Someone for Eighty Years?

In a recent interview, actress Cameron Diaz made it quite clear that she is content to be – and intent on being – a serial dater.

In an interview with the UK’s Stylist Magazine, she says, “I think the big misconception in our society is that we’re supposed to meet the one when we’re 18, and we’re supposed to get married to them and love them for the rest of our lives. Bulls**t.”

(Okay, tell us how you really feel.)

“Who would want to be with the same person for 80 years?” she added. “Why not break it up a bit…I think people get freaked out about getting married and spending 20 or 30 years sleeping with the same person.”

So what does Diaz intend to do?

“Have someone for five years and another person for another five years. Life is long and lucky and yes, love might just last forever, but you don’t always live with the person you love forever. You can have that love the rest of your life but you might love someone else along the way, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”

It’s hard to know where to begin.

But I know how I felt after reading her comments. I wasn’t angry. I wasn’t disgusted. I was sad. She would probably be incensed at the very thought of it, but it’s true. I felt deeply, deeply sorry for her.

Not simply because she doesn’t hold out much hope for a relationship that would stand the test of time; not simply because she seemingly reduces such a relationship, if it were to have any kind of shelf life, to decent sex; but because she has no sense that a life lived in monogamy, over a lifetime, has any real value, much less beauty.

But it is beautiful, and fortunately others in Hollywood see it.

Consider the touching and tender aging sequence portrayed in the opening scenes of “Up,” or the moving images of the elderly couple in “Inception.” It would seem that there are still those in Hollywood who know that there is value and beauty in a love that commits; a love that grows old together; a love that is far, far deeper than mere physical intimacy.

In the afterword of my new book, Christ Among the Dragons, I tell of a visit with Billy and Ruth Graham at their home in the Blue Ridge mountains of Montreat, North Carolina. I was touched, as so many before me, by his humility and genuine grace. But even more by his passionate love for Ruth, who sadly passed away just a few short months after our visit.

Following an hour or so of conversation, he walked us back to the bedroom where Ruth was confined to bed. She had gamely prepared to receive us, and had been moved to a nearby chair, next to a low-lying bookshelf where notebooks containing books of the Bible had been prepared for her with oversized type so that she could read them despite her failing eyesight.

They talked of their nightly devotions with one another, how they prayed for their children, and how those who said there was no romance at their age were wrong. “We have romance through our eyes,” Billy explained.

He was right. They did.

My wife and I have only been married for twenty-five years, long by many standards – short by ours. The richness of our relationship grows with time. There is no one else who shares my life, my memories, my heart, more than she does. There is no one I can talk to the way I talk to her. She is my best friend.

So who wants to live with someone for eighty years?

I do.

Italian Wedding in Grand Rapids | Noto’s

Last month I had the opportunity to photograph an event at Noto’s in Cascade and like always they did an outstanding job. Owner Tony Noto was on hand for the event and showed me around their lower level, called the “Wine Cellar”. I had heard about it, but I was blown away by the amazing architecture and environment they’ve created in their lower level. I snapped a couple of photos below so you can see what I’m talking about.

When I was in their cellar, it felt like I was back in Italy. If there was ever a bride out there looking to have an Italian wedding in Grand Rapids, Noto’s would be the go to place for it. Michigan Wedding Photography | Ben + Kayla

Ben and Kayla are another amazing couple that we were able to photograph here in Grand Rapids. On the wedding day I was joined partially by my wife, Rebecca, and Jill Bergeron of Jill Bergeron Photography. Jill was the official second shooter for the day and did a great job!

In case you don’t know Ben and Kayla’s story, you’ll have to visit their wedding website where they posted the amazing story from both of their perspectives. At the same time you can view their engagement photos on the Ada Covered Bridge this past winter. Their wedding website is so customized with all kinds of details, it’s why we love providing them to every couple we work with.

Their wedding took place at Madison Square Church and their reception was at Applause Catering in Grand Rapids. Ben spoke his vows with such conviction that it brought me to tears. I wish I could have said my vows with as much passion, love and tenderness as he did. In between the ceremony and reception we visited the Blue Pedestrian Bridge and Calder Plaza. I was amazed that Calder Plaza was empty on a Saturday afternoon, but I think it was my favorite location of the day because it just says “Grand Rapids”.

Their first dance was choreographed prior to the wedding and they did a fabulous job. Studio D2D provided great entertainment throughout the evening and the biggest hit of the night was their photobooth! Flowers were provided by Grandville Floral.

Chicago Engagement Photography | Bill + Nichole

Welcome to Bill and Nichole’s engagement session. These two are such a cute couple and we are so excited for their December wedding in Chicago. We met Nichole a few years ago and when she emailed to tell us she had gotten engaged, we knew she would be planning a fun wedding. We had a wedding in Chicago over a June weekend and we fit in their engagement session on the Sunday evening following our wedding. We visited Millennium Park and the Museum Campus – two of the best locations Chicago has to offer. We were blessed with an amazing sunset (as you will see below) and the photos below are about 98% straight out of the camera. In our post processing, all we did was remove a few dust spots and brighten their faces somewhat, other than that, the sky looked exactly like you’ll see below. Enjoy!
