Need to Reduce The Number of People At Your Wedding?
As you’ve probably heard, summer 2020 weddings are being pushed to fall 2020 or even into 2021. It’s happening around the world and it’s happening to our 2020 brides as well.
I wanted to provide some perspective if you’re trying to keep your wedding date and reduce the guest list (rather than reschedule).
How in the world do you take people off your guests list that you were planning on inviting?
Many couples agonize over the question, “If we invite Uncle Jerry we ‘HAVE TO’ invite his kids as well as Cousin Erica, even though we haven’t seen her in 3 years…”
With the Covid-19 pandemic traveling the globe, couples are being forced to reduce their guest list because of government mandates. How do you go from 210 guests to 48 or 24 or 10?
How do you do it?
It’s actually a very simple exercise.
It comes from a wise friend who was married, went through a divorce and is now remarried with children.
It might not seem like the most obvious person to listen to when it comes to your guest list, but we watched him go through the “guest list agony” not once but twice.
So what advice did he offer?
He said,
“Think about your 50th wedding anniversary party. Picture it in your mind. You standing next to your wife celebrating 50 years of marriage.
Now think about the people you want there with you during that celebration. Can you picture them?
If you can, those are the people you should invite to your wedding.
Everyone else doesn’t matter.”
I argued, “Yes they do matter…”
He responded with, “No they don’t, you don’t picture them mattering enough during the next 50 years of your marriage to show up at your anniversary party, why does it matter if they are there for your wedding day?”
I was floored.
I realized he was right.
If someone is not going to be there for my marriage, they don’t “HAVE TO” be part of my wedding day.
So that’s it.
That’s how you reduce your guest list for your upcoming wedding day.
I hope the exercise helps you think through your guest list in a new way and allows you to celebrate your marriage with those closest to you.
