What to Do If You Hate Having Your Photo Taken
“I hate having my photo taken…”
It’s the most common thing I hear when photographing people.
I know you (most likely) hate having your photo taken. After all, it is one of the most common objections that I get as a photographer, as about 99.9% of people tell me that they hate stepping out in front of the camera.
So, my question in response to that is, “What makes you say that? Why do you hate having your photo taken?”.
In the end, most people do not have a good answer, as all I usually hear back is “Oh, I do not know”.
I then follow up with, “Was it because your mom told you to sit down in front of the fireplace and smile at the camera one Christmas long, long ago?”
For whatever reason, in the back of your mind, you most likely have had a negative experience having your photo taken.
As a professional photographer in Grand Rapids for nearly 20 years, I know clients have a negative script playing their head each time they step in front of my camera.
So, be sure to continue reading, if you would like to learn what to do if you hate having your own photo captured:
● Practice. If “practice makes perfect”, why not put in a little practice before your photo session? While at home, step in front of a mirror and practice some smiles, figure out what you feel your “good side” is, and showcase some facial expressions. After all, if you are prepared in front of the camera, you will certainly enjoy your photo session much more!
● Relax. If you’re tense or nervous during your portrait session, you will not enjoy your session. I want you to be as relaxed as possible. Being relaxed is how you share your comfort and confidence with the camera. I will remind you to breathe during your session (you may stop for some reason) and even tell a few jokes along the way.
● Talk. Having a conversation will help get your mind off the camera and help you relax. I am able to get to know you better during your session by having conversations that focus around you and your world.
Enjoying your time spent in front of the camera is certainly of importance. These are just a few pointers to assist you with not hating having your own photo taken!
