Eric + Andrea | Downtown Grand Rapids Engagement Photos
It's wonderful when a couple like Eric and Andrea contact us for their wedding photography needs. Andrea was referred to us from someone at her workplace who was kind enough to say we were the best to work with. As we got to know these two, we realized we were going to love working with them as their wedding day approaches. As we talked through their engagement session, we realized these two wanted something that showed off spring and the beautiful area of West Michigan or something downtown and urban. Though we wanted to give them an early spring, old man winter still had a hold on the West Michigan weather. Though we were blessed with a sunny and mild day in February for their engagement photos, it was decided that the best option was a downtown Grand Rapids engagement session with a more urban feel.
They decided on two outfits for their engagement photos. One more formal (suit and dresss) and another more casual (jeans and jackets). Our session started off at our tiny house in downtown Grand Rapids and from there we set off on an urban adventure.
Our first stop was to a very secret location in downtown Grand Rapids. It provided wonderful views of the skyline to give their session a solid foundation of feeling like they were in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids.
After some time over looking the top of the city, we headed off to one of the best areas of downtown for photos near Bistro Bella Vita. There, we found a couple of great spots right around their building and took full advantage of the mild February weather.
The goal of engagement photos is to show off the love the couple has for each other. That means images that are cropped tighter to the couple we are photographing. However, the backdrop of downtown Grand Rapids allows us to zoom out and capture amazing architecture, patterns, symmetry and other intriguing elements that we find ourselves near throughout the area.
As I tell many couples, we can make any location look great with the right gear and lighting and this is never more true than in downtown Grand Rapids.
With the afternoon sunlight streaming down everywhere, I knew the Grand Rapids Skywalk would be a great backdrop for the formal dress Eric and Andrea chose. The light coming through the Skywalk was simply stunning, don't you agree?
After a short trip back to our place in downtown Grand Rapids and a quick change of clothes, we headed down to the Blue Pedestrian Bridge that spans the Grand River. There we used the setting sun to capture these two in a more relaxed setting, after they had changed into jeans rather than their more formal wear.
As the sun set, we finished up our session with Eric and Andrea. Downtown is a great spot for engagement photos because even on the walk back we were able to use Monroe Center for a backdrop for another stunning set of images.
We finished off their engagement session with a second secret location filled with lights that made the scene rival a downtown Chicago style photograph. We wait with excited anticipation for their wedding day in September.
